Portobello

Sigrid Rausing, who just bought Granta, also owns Portobello Books. They have just launched their portfolio with three interesting-enough looking titles: Jeremy Leggett's Half Gone (Greenpeace Chief Scientist explains that the oil is running out - yup, really!); Nasrin Alavi's We Are Iran ("a seamlessly-edited, multi-voiced bulletin from contemporary Iran ... using the nation's blogs as its primary source") and Glen Neath's debut novel The Outgoing Man.

Incidentally, We Are Iran is being done in the US by Soft Skull Press and in Canada by Raincoast. Three independents, one book, it's been rather nice.

Serendipoetry

Vigil

An entire night
thrown down
beside a
butchered
companion with his
grimacing
mouth turned
to the full moon
with his congested hands
thrust
into my silence
I wrote
letters full of love

I have never held
so hard
to life
