Flannery O'Connor:

I am often asked if universities stifle writers. My view is that they don't stifle enough of them.

Mark, this reminds me of Larkin's remark to Douglas Dunn when the latter arrived at Hull as creative writing fellow: "There's a lot of creative writing going on in this university and I'm relying on you to stamp it out."

  2. @Mark: Can you give a reference for that quote?

  3. No! My friend Rowan sent it to me!! But I'll chase it (and him!)

  4. BrainyQuote (http://tinyurl.com/4ak4za) have the quote continuing: "There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher." But that still doesn't get us a source ...

  5. I had this quotation tacked to my wall as an undergrad. As an English major, it helped me endure the unimaginable pomposity of would-be writers who disliked reading.
