Alain Robbe-Grillet est mort, il avait 85 ans. The father of the nouveau roman died last night of a heart attack.

  1. It seems a shame not to comment on this "disparition" as the French call it. Is he now considered too passé? I have done one of my frivolous blog entries on him (

It seems the indifference extends even to France itself according to today's Le Monde: "Quatre-vingts personnes.

  3. I read a number of riveews of Reality Hunger, and had decided (they were largely dismissive) to skip reading it, although I'd initially been interested. Then I came across a copy in the New Books section of a tiny little library where I was stopping briefly. I read the first couple of chapters and got hooked. I'm grateful for the appendix, which I know Shields didn't want I like to know what's really him and where his quotations have come from. I'm not a huge fan of pastiche, so (as soon as I can get my own copy) my desire to read Reality Hunger is in part a desire to be pushed to question my discomfort with it. At the very least, it's going to be a pleasure to read some provocative statements by smart thinkers.
